  1. Home of the Mayan indian civilization from the 1st Century A.D.,
  2. Columbus  visited this country in 1502.  Honduras became
  3. independent from Spain in 1821 and from the Federation of Central
  4. America in 1838.  From 1963 to 1975, General Oswaldo Lopez
  5. Arellano ruled as President by virtue of one election and two
  6. coups.  In 1975, the army took control of the government and
  7. resumed land distribution, raised minimum wages and started a
  8. massive education program.  In 1982 an elected civilian
  9. government took control.  The United States provides military and
  10. economic aid to Honduras, mainly to prevent the shipment of arms
  11. from Nicaragua to El Salvador.  In 1986 over $100 million dollars
  12. was provided from the United States to strengthen Honduras
  13. against boarder skirmishes from Nicaragua.                    @
